How Long Does It Take to Paint a Home Exterior?

When the outside of your house starts to look faded or out of date, or it just seems to need some sprucing up, exterior painting is an exciting option! However, it is important to know what you’re getting into before you start that kind of project. So, how long does it take to paint the exterior of a house?

There are many factors that come into play here, the main question being, are you going to do it yourself, or hire a house painting company? If you are going to hire a professional painter, then the answer is, “No time at all,” since it won’t take any of your time (other than choosing colors!).

However, you probably want a more specific answer. The following information is based on the speed that a well-equipped and experienced professional painting team would go, on an average 2-storey house and average preparation conditions.

Stage 1: Cleaning – 1 day

The cleaning stage involves pressure washing the home to remove dirt, mildew, pollen, and any loose paint or other contaminants that may be present. This would not take a whole day (probably a few hours), but the house needs to dry thoroughly afterwards. If the house has wood siding, it may need to dry for more than a day, but we’ll just count it as one for the purpose of this example.

Stage 2: Prepping – 1 day

The prepping stage is often the biggest variable, as it could involve large amounts of stripping and priming, or it could entail wood repair. For an average 2-storey home, it is safest to plan on a full day of preparation for surface preparation, priming, and protection of non-painted items (windows, mailboxes, shutters, etc). Again, if the wood or the previous paint coatings have deteriorated, the preparation could take several days.

Stage 3: Painting & cleanup – 2-3 days

Applying the paint needs to be done with careful attention to detail for it to perform well. However, for an experienced house painter with good equipment, the house will not take more than a couple days to paint under normal circumstances.

Stage 4: Enjoy the results! – 5 to 8 years!

When your home exterior has been professionally painted with quality materials, it usually lasts from 5 to 8 years, though that can vary based on the condition of the house and the elements that the home is exposed to.
