Preparation Checklist: Cabinet Painting and Refinishing

Confirm Project Details

• Finalize Your Colors and FinishConfirm your selected color, sheen, and finish with your sales representative before the project begins. If you are using different colors for the cabinet boxes, island, vanity, or other sections, label each color by location.
• Review the Project ScopeConfirm which components are included, such as cabinet doors, drawer fronts, cabinet boxes, interiors, end panels, trim, islands, vanities, or built-ins. Any additional repairs or areas not included in the original scope should be discussed before work begins.
• Confirm Your Hardware PlanDecide whether you will reuse, replace, or update your knobs, pulls, hinges, and other hardware. If you are reusing hardware, keeping it together in labeled bags can make reinstallation easier.
• Leave Cabinet Doors and Drawers in Place Unless Instructed OtherwiseOur crew will coordinate the removal and labeling of doors, drawer fronts, and hardware according to the project plan.

Empty and Clear the Work Area

• Empty All Cabinets and Drawers Being Painted or RefinishedRemove dishes, food, toiletries, medications, linens, cleaning supplies, office materials, clothing, and other personal belongings. Even when cabinet interiors are not being painted, they may need to be emptied to provide safe access.
• Clear Countertops and Nearby SurfacesRemove countertop appliances, décor, dishes, toiletries, small electronics, and other items from the work area. For kitchen projects, plan to relocate items such as coffee makers, toasters, and microwaves. For vanities, remove toiletries and medications and store them safely elsewhere.
• Clear the Areas Above and Beside the CabinetryRemove décor, plants, artwork, decorative objects, and other items from the tops of cabinets and adjacent surfaces.
• Remove Wall Hangings Near the Work AreaTake down pictures, mirrors, artwork, and other items that could interfere with access or be exposed to dust and project activity.
• Create a Clear Path to the Work AreaRemove rugs, baskets, furniture, and other obstacles so the crew can safely move doors, drawers, equipment, and materials through the home.

Large, Delicate, or Valuable Items: For large, delicate, or valuable items that are difficult to move, please contact us in advance so we can help coordinate assistance.

Connected Fixtures and Electronics

• Disconnect Electronics Near the CabinetryFor built-ins, home offices, entertainment centers, and wet bars, disconnect wiring from televisions, computers, stereos, appliances, and other electronics before work begins. Keep cords, remotes, and accessories together in labeled bags.
• Coordinate Plumbing or Fixture Removal When NecessaryIf a kitchen or bathroom project requires a sink, faucet, plumbing fixture, or appliance to be disconnected, confirm who will handle that work before the project begins. Plumbing and electrical work should be completed by the appropriate qualified professional unless specifically included in your project scope.
• Identify Items That Should Remain in PlaceLet your sales representative or crew leader know about any fixtures, shelving, appliances, or other items that cannot be removed or relocated.

Existing Conditions

• Report Existing Damage or Moisture ConcernsInform your sales representative or crew leader about water damage, active leaks, swelling, loose veneer, peeling or failing coatings, damaged edges, or other conditions that may affect the finished result.
• Identify Fragile or Damaged ItemsNotify the crew of any broken glass, unstable objects, delicate furniture, or damaged surfaces near the work area. Taking photos beforehand can help document the condition of delicate items.
• Review Additional Preparation NeedsCabinet repairs, extensive sanding, stripping, failing coatings, or lead-safe work may require additional time, materials, or charges. We will discuss any necessary changes before proceeding.

Plan for Temporary Disruptions

• Plan for Limited Access to the SpaceCabinet painting and refinishing may temporarily limit access to kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, offices, or other areas. Arrange alternate locations for cooking, food storage, toiletries, medication, laundry, or workspace as needed. If your pet is normally fed in the kitchen or another work area, set up a separate feeding space away from the project to help keep them safe and maintain a consistent routine.
• Secure Pets and Keep Children Away from Active Work AreasPainting and refinishing involve equipment, open doors, removed cabinet components, and products that should not be disturbed. A separate, secure area is usually the most comfortable option for pets and children during the project.
• Plan for Household ComfortWe use low- and no-VOC products whenever appropriate, but freshly applied coatings may still have an odor while curing. If anyone in your household is pregnant, has respiratory concerns, or is especially sensitive to odors, consider staying away from active work areas while the project is underway.
• Provide Current Contact InformationShare a phone number or other contact information where you can be reached throughout the project.
