When a Paint Project Uncovers Wood Rot

Paul Viggiano, A.G. Williams Painting, here. I just want to show you an example of some things that can be discovered when we’re doing a painting project that turns into some carpentry repairs. We noticed some rotted siding, and then behind the siding, unfortunately, we have rotted plywood underneath this window frame.

So we will remove that and put in new plywood and new tar paper. Eli, what are we going to use, tar paper or Tyvek? “Tyvek, I think.” Tyvek. So we’ll use Tyvek, and then we’ll put new siding up and do it properly.

…surprises, but sometimes you have them. But that’s why you pick the people that you trust to do the job [right].

Key Takeaways

What happens when we find rot

Hidden damage is shown to you, then repaired the right way.

  1. 1

    Found during preparation

Rotted siding turned up during a painting project, with rotted plywood behind it under a window frame.

  2. 2

    Damaged material removed

The rotted siding and plywood come out instead of being painted over.

  3. 3

    Rebuilt with a weather barrier

New plywood and a Tyvek weather barrier go in before new siding is installed.

  4. 4

    You approve the repair

Carpentry and repair costs are approved by you before the work proceeds.
